Datong Gate, also known as the South Gate, was one of the four major city gates (East, South, West, and North) of the Jianchang Guard in the Ming Dynasty. After its completion in the 20th year of the Hongwu reign (1387 AD), it endured countless wars, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. The Datong Tower was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, weathering the vicissitudes of time. In 1998, the Datong Tower was reconstructed.
The rebuilt tower largely preserves the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty, restores the Ming-style brick and stone city walls, relocates the units and residents who had illegally occupied the city walls and tower, and reconstructs the barbican. Covering an area of 2,800 square meters and standing 23 meters tall, the rebuilt Datong Tower has become a major historical and cultural landmark in Xichang.
